The Roman army operated like a well oiled machine when on the battlefield. Their discipline was unmatched in their age, and would not be again for some time. The emphasis of their army was based not on the individual warrior, but on the teamwork of a whole unit. It was this mindset that would send the Roman army to victory over its many foes.

To enact strict discipline on the soldiers and keep them in line, a Centurion was assigned to each Century of men (80 men). Along with the Centurion was a Standard Bearer, who bore the Roman standard, their flag. Each Legion (roughly 5000 men, the basic Roman army composition) had one Eage Standard, which bore the name of their legion. The loss of the Eagle Standard in battle was the ultimate disgrace to Romans, giving them more of a reason to fight on. Roman Eagle Standard
