The Roman military was not just a well disciplined machine, but a well operated one. The Commanders were usually of the best tactical mind, leading their armies to victory against a more numerous enemy.

The Roman Legions were very versatile and mobile units. They could move quickly and an entire century could turn almost on a dime. While other military units of their enemies could do that as well, they were either of different formations that were slower, or they did not drill as a team in doing so, giving the Romans the upper hand in maneuverability.

The Romans were big on infantry, but also used cavalry to their utmost advantage. Though most legions did not have a large detachment of cavalry, it was usually enough to get the job done. Roman cavalry was well equipped but not so much as to burden the rider or the horse. They were usually very swift and good for flanking maneuvers.
